Sara’s Malayalam movie Director Jude Anthany Joseph and Writer Akshay Hareesh need to be appreciated from the heart for drawing the viewers attention to a socially relevant topic without losing a grip on the plot of the film. The concept of the movie is that a woman should not be forced into parenthood unless she is ready for it. The Malayalam movie Sara’s succeeds in bringing the Idea that women have the right to focus on their career before proceeding to become parents.
The Malayalam movie Sara’s streaming on Amazon Prime Movies is the story of a woman who decides early in life that she will not be bearing any children. Sara (Anna Ben) has all her life dreamt of becoming a filmmaker and see her name appear on the credit rolls, to make this come true she has assisted on many movies and she finally wants to write and direct her own movie. While she is researching for her movie’s climax with Dr. Sandhya Philip (Dhanya Verma) she meets Jeevan (Sunny Wayne). Both of them like each other’s company and fall in love. The best thing in it for Sara is that even Jeevan does not want any children ever.
After marriage like everyone’s relatives, Sara’s and Jeevan’s relatives start asking for the “good news”.Both of them in one voice tell their families that they will not be having any children. But moving forward we see the lead characters mature and feel the same thing that brought them together, distancing them from each other.
Jude Anthany Joseph’s Sara’s highlights the society’s belief about pregnancy and parenthood. We all believe that a woman should have the choice of deciding when she wants to become a parent, bur the parents and society in general pressurized her when the time comes. Sara’s emphasizes on the difficulties faced by the protagonist in standing he ground.
Mallika Sukumaran (Jeevan’s mother) and Benny P Nayarambalam (Sara’s Dad) play two diabolically opposite but notable roles, while Jeevan’s Mother is a typical conventional mother, Sara’s Dad is supporting and understanding. Another notable character Dr Hafeez is played well by Sidhique, who explains clearly that it is better not to be a parent than be a bad parent.
The Music by Shaan Rehman supports the story well and the writing by Akshay Hareesh goes into taboo subjects but does not loose the grip on the plot. The film till the end shows how women find their happiness in different things they do in life.
